A quick 4-day getaway from our hectic adult life was set into motion one fine weekend. It almost didn't push through because of the threat of COVID 19, but we've already paid for stuff so, eff you, virus! Surgical masks on, let's go to Kota Kinabalu!

We booked the Asiana Hotel, located just 10 minutes away from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). We arrived around 3 am, and the plan was to book a Grab car to our hotel. If you plan to do the same, the Grab pick up point is at Pillar 5, near the Orange Convenience Store. From the Arrival Hall, exit near KFC, walk past the taxi stand and then go straight until you see the Orange Convenience Store.

We booked and waited. And waited some more. I noticed that the car on the Grab app wasn't moving. I messaged to let the driver know where we are waiting, but no reply (dedma/seen zoned/ghosted). So we decided to walk back to the taxi stand and get a cab instead. The driver charged us 45 MYR of what could've been a 10 MYR ride had Grab didn't ghost us.

10 minutes and a quick history lesson from the cab driver later, we arrived at the hotel. The door was closed and lights were out so we had to knock (this is after a few minutes of contemplating if we were indeed at the right hotel). One guy inside was sleeping in one of the chairs in front of the reception area and was kind enough to open the door. Low and behold, the receptionist was there all along, sleeping behind the counter. Reminded me of a hotel we booked when I was in Ho Chi Minh lol.

An important thing to note is that Kota Kinabalu charges a tourism tax of 10 MYR to be paid once you checked in to your hotel. This a mandatory charge that you need to pay for every stay (regardless of which hotel you are staying at). The charge is not per person, but per room - so since we booked two rooms, we had to pay 80 MYR upon check-in.

So what's the point of this article? Well, basically I'd like to list down what I liked and did not like about that hotel. For reference for the future me or anybody out there planning to book the same hotel.

Overall Rating

For those who are impatient to know, I am starting my overall rating first.

I was contemplating giving it 2 stars but with how cheap we got the room, I guess it's not fair to expect a high standard value when you pay for a cheap price. That's just how the world works, I guess. If you do not have plans on spending too much time inside your hotel room, this will be enough for you. However, if you plan to have some relaxation time inside your hotel, there are other hotels around the city you can choose from.

If you want to know about what made me end up with this rating, then scroll down for the deets.

What I LIKE

Accessibility
It's near the airport, so you don't have to rush or worry about rush hour traffic when catching your flight.

Friendly Staff
From the receptionist to their housekeeping, they are very helpful and all smiles. I had an incident about my room key card not working so they had to give me an actual key to use. They asked if I know how to use it, and said YES with all smiles. The ego in me was saying - "Uhm hello, of course, I know how to use a damn key! I'm an adult". Only to find out that it was more complicated than shooting the key into the hole and turning it to open. Good thing, one of the staff followed me and taught me how to use it - alright - it had a system.

Good Location
There are quite a few local restaurants nearby (one just right beside the hotel) if you want to try local food. There is a 711 convenience store at the back and also a nearby grocery store.
If you are feeling fancy or not into local food, you can go to the nearby Harbour City where you can pick from a few restaurants serving both local and western food.

Also, a block away is the Sabah State Mosque if that is part of your itinerary.
The nearest mall is the Imago Shopping Mall.

What I DO NOT LIKE

Quite a few issues I experience with the room we booked, so here's a rundown:
Poor Illumination

That is the only regular light I had near the bed area. There is a night light in between the beds but that's it. The other regular light was near the bathroom, but even if it was turned on, it did not help at all in terms of providing the proper illumination of a normal person with a 20/20 vision needed.

Limited Electrical Socket

So that is the only electrical socket I have in my room. Need I say more?

Note: Malaysia uses Type G power sockets, so don't forget to bring power plug adapters.

Bugs and Ants
I was not able to finish a bag of chips I bought from the nearby 711 store, so I wrapped it with the intention of eating the rest later. But a few hours past, I found ants eating my leftover chips already. I also found a dead (thank God) bug or cockroach on the floor on our second day.

During our stay, they only cleaned our room once. I don't know if its because we had an incident the first day about some item that went missing (it was a false alarm, it just got misplaced while the room was being cleaned) OR because I didn't put out the sign that I want my room to be cleaned.

Dirty Electric Kettle
As much as I appreciate hotel rooms that provide electric kettles, I expect that part of their housekeeping is to ensure that these amenities they provide are clean and ready for the next guest. Much like the glass, towels, cups, that comes with the room. The kettle still had water inside - which I don't know if it was old water - and some yellowish stain or crust in it. I know, I have an electric kettle at home too, and I understand that yellow stains can accumulate over time because water is not as pure as we sometimes hope. BUT, I KNOW that these can be prevented if you clean them on a regular basis. Which, obviously, they don't.

Limited Cable Channels
I know this ain't a 5-star hotel, but if you are one of those that can't live without a tv at hotel rooms - just a heads up if you are planning to book a room in this hotel. If I remember it right, I think they only had 5 channels and only 1 that shows English movies.

Weak A/C
Upon check-in, they give you the remote to the TV and the A/C. I find the temperature in my room not cold enough during our stay, but even if I set the remote to a lower temperature it doesn't seem to budge. They probably lock the temperature to save electricity. So, I wonder what's the remote for?

Strong Cigarette Odour
I don't know where the smell comes from since I don't have any window in my room. But I'm guessing the smell from a non-smoking room goes through the bathroom exhaust. It seems like they have a poor ventilation system in place.

These are just my personal opinion and experience. What I might have experience from this hotel might be different from others so, at the end of the day - it still goes down to your own (smart) choice.

City Light Hotel
As we plan last minute where to spend the long weekend holiday, a friend and I decided to go to Baguio.

We ended up booking Citylight Hotel which is just around 6-7 minutes walk from the Genesis bus terminal. This hotel was what we exactly needed at that time because as growing adults, walking now seems to be the hardest thing to do..queue in 98 Degrees.

Reception Area

Their receiving area is very spacious, clean, and elegant. People behind the reception area are also nice and courteous. Upon check-in, they require a Php 500 cash security deposit, which they will give back once you check out. Make sure to keep the claim stub so you won't have any problems in getting your security deposit back.

The lobby or waiting area.
They have a cozy waiting area. You can actually stay here and enjoy the view after check out and while waiting for your bus to Manila. Unfortunately, there is no TV to keep you entertained while relaxing or waiting. They do have a cafe near the entrance if you want to get some cafe, a small meal, or bread while waiting.

Room

Our original plan was to book the room for one night only, and just walk around or stay near session road until we board the bus back to Manila. We did attempt to ask if we can extend our room stay for a few hours but since it's a holiday weekend, all rooms were fully booked.

Deluxe Room
2 Double beds
No aircon
Inclusive of buffet breakfast
Shower with water heater

More room details are available here: Agoda.

Citylight Hotel
Room is very spacious

The bed is comfy, but the pillows are a bit flat. They have towels in case you forgot to bring or do not want to bring your own. Slippers are provided as well.

Large TV for a very spacious room. Water kettle, 3in1 coffee, and complimentary water are also provided.

The bathroom is spacious as well.  The usual complimentary bathroom toiletries are provided. Though I noticed that the water pressure is low but manageable.

They don't have bidet but they have 'tabo' or water dipper.

Buffet Breakfast at the Penthouse level.
Our experience on our first night at this hotel was great. However, the second one was not. Our confidence in our energy towards the day got the best of us, and ended up deciding to find another hotel or room where we can stay, shower, and have a sleep before we head back to Manila. We called back the hotel and fortunately, they did have a spare room that we can check-in.

When we arrived, what they offered was the basement room (non-aircon) which was much smaller than the first room we booked. This was fine with us at first since we will just be using the room for a few hours.

For reference, details of their basement room are available on Agoda.

Just a heads up on what you might experience when you get the basement room:
  • There is a window but your view would be a stack of construction materials.
  • No ceiling or desk fan. We had to call and request it.
  • Low water pressure. Despite that fact that the room is located in the basement.
As the saying goes, beggars can't be choosers. At that moment, we had to make do of what we had because there was no available room at other hotels. This was also the nearest hotel to the bus terminal so I am just thankful that we only had to endure that room for a few hours.

Despite the bad experience from our last night, the hotel staff is still commendable for being helpful and courteous. I still highly recommend this hotel because of its great location, buffet breakfast, and helpful hotel staff. If ever I'll book at this hotel in the future, I'll just make sure not to take the basement room ever again.

Address: No. 35號, Section 1, Kaifeng St, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
I treated my parents for their anniversary to a short trip to Taiwan last weekend. This is my second time to visit, and because of various reasons (cheap fare, visa-exempt for Filipinos, previous travel experience, cold weather, etc.), I decided to bring them to Taiwan so they can also experience first hand how gorgeous this country is.

As the only young and millennial adult to assist my parents for this trip, I did a lot of research to make sure we don't end up getting lost and lose time. We only have 3 days to spare and explore Taiwan so I had to make sure I'd make it worthwhile. Part of my research was the hotel I  booked from Agoda, and I'd like to share some tips and information I gathered and discovered about this place.

Nearest Taipei Main Station MRT Exit
Single Journey Token

If you are coming from the Taoyuan airport and will be taking the bus (1819) to Taipei Main Station, the nearest exit you can go to is Exit Z10. If you will be taking the MRT express train to Taipei Main Station, the nearest exit is A1 Exit 4.

The nearest MRT lines if you will be coming from Exit Z10 are the Bannan (blue) line and Tamsui–Xinyi (red) line. The red line is quite a few walk and 2 escalators away.

Tip when using the single journey token:
Entry: Tap the token on the turnstile
Exit: Tap the token first before inserting into the turnstile's token slot.

Breakfast

They serve buffet breakfast which starts 6:30AM to 10:30 AM. Their breakfast consists of salads, rice, sausages, buns, porridge, soup, and cereal. They serve coffee but no fresh juice. Instead they have carbonated juice and drinks.

At the counter near the breakfast area, you can see small biscuits or snacks displayed. These are free and you can get them anytime you want.

Room

We booked the Deluxe Triple room and were satisfied with the space and amenities. They replace complimentary water, tea bags, and coffee everyday. Toiletries are also complete. The only complication we experienced was on how to operate the shower. Although there was an instruction manual posted, it would be more helpful if they add a note that the faucet needs to be turned 180 degrees to the right. We had to get some help and call the reception but all is well and the guy was able to assist and help us with the shower.

Instead of the usual paper card that you hand by the door handles, they have a touch screen pad that you can use if you want to have your room made up. Same touch screen for operating the lights.

When turning on the AC, a card is provided for the instruction. Basically, you have to point the remote to red-orange sensor pad located on the ceiling.

Nearby Convenience Store, ATM Machines, Stores, etc.

There is a Family Mart just a few steps away from the hotel. On the other side, there is a 711 store. If you do not have an Easy Card yet or need to reload before you start your Taipei adventure, these two stores are conveniently near the hotel.

ATM machines are also near the hotel. If I remember correctly, I was able to pass by two ATM machines.

Also a block away, there are stores selling a variety of fruits.

Luggage Service

Check in is 3PM but in case you get to arrive at the hotel before the check in time, you can leave your bags at the reception. People assigned to the reception speak good English so you won't have any trouble in explaining or asking questions. They are also very courteous and helpful.

Nearest Shopping District

The hotel is just10-15 minutes walk to the Ximending Shopping District.

My face is not prone to pimples or acne, but on days when I do get a visit from the pimple fairy, I always grab my Mario Badescu Drying Lotion.

Rewind to a few years back, I was content with using over the counter pimple-drying-spot-corrector treatments. Some work, but the affected area takes time to dry, or if it does dry, leaves dark marks. This I remedy immediately by applying whitening cream, specifically Pond's whitening cream. And so I thought to myself,  "you got this girl! you have a system that works!".

But one day, I saw Kylie Jenner using this Mario Badescu drying lotion in insta. I researched and saw a lot of good reviews about this product. So, I went to Rustan's (which at that time was the only place I knew that sell Mario Badescu here in Manila) and bought this bottle to try. I must admit, at first I was so hesitant to buy because of its price. I mean, really 1,000+ pesos for this small bottle?!

Ever since then, it became my holy grail for fighting acne. I was amazed that overnight, it was able to dry my pimple! Even on days when I was so careless that I let a small bump turn to a cystic pimple, in just 1-2 days tops, it dries it immediately. Holy crap, my 1,000+ was so worth it.

Just today, I ordered my 2nd bottle online from Beauty MNL

Comparing the price to Rustan's where I bought my first bottle, it's a bit pricier.

But in cases when you just don't have the luxury to go to the mall, park your car, or book a grab, I am willing to let go of the 80 pesos difference. Their super convenient online ordering system and next day delivery makes the extra charge worth it.

When using Mario Badescu Drying Lotion:

  1. Do not shake the bottle. Use a clean cotton bud and dip it well enough that the end touches the pink stuff at the bottom.
  2. Dab the pink stuff on the affected area and do not rub. You will feel a slight tingly sensation but just let it dry and do its magic.
  3. Depends on the pimple, I usually apply it morning and evening on a clean face.
